Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety because of the word"association. Ford started to become interested in acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but at the time she already had made her debut on television in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
